About Guitars Buying a new guitar is a considerable investment for most of us. An instrument is all about inspiration. You are the musician and the guitar is the tool you use to express your feelings and music. This has nothing to do with what models you choose or how much they cost. Some basic knowledge about the different wood types, neck and body profiles, pickups etc will help you in making the best choice. However, over the last decade or so, the MIMs has gotten a considerable face lift and the overall quality is very high. In fact, the reason why they are cheaper, ha sless to do with quality but rather lower labour costs, cheaper type of laquer and apply methods etc.

Check and adjust the action at the nut. Measure the high e string and the low E string at the 12th fret by placing a precision ruler on top of the 12th fret. To raise the saddle piece, tighten the setscrew. To lower the saddle piece, loosen the setscrew. Place a radius gauge that corresponds to your fretboard radius on the strings. The gauge should be able to sit on the low and high E strings while touching the middle strings. If the middle strings are higher or lower than the gauge, you will need to adjust the strings’ height relative to the outside strings.
When the gauge is placed on the two outer strings, the rest of the strings should be touching the gauge but not holding it off of the outer strings. For more detailed information about how to set the radius on your guitar strings, please see the how to set the radius on my guitar string page.

I promise the tables will still be there after you finish reading. We also received a report of a tweed 5G12 Concert. The 5G12 Concert is the earliest version from very late and early so the existence of a tweed example, while extremely rare, is certainly plausible since Fender was making lots of tweed amps during the same time period. Working at FMI — I was able to interview a fellow who wishes to remain anonymous who worked at Fender in in the amp department. Although his job was somewhat limited, his recollections provided some really fascinating insights to how the amps were built.
For instance, he confirmed our assumption that the amp chassis were put into stock after being stamped with serial numbers and that the chassis were pulled from the stock bins randomly just as with Fender guitar neck plates. The boss came around and said what we’d be building. The chassis weren’t used chronologically. Probably the same as the pots and transformers that we just dug out of the boxes. I think in the corners of the boxes were older pots remaining from earlier dates

The body is made of highly flamed maple, absolutely gorgeous. And most of all, there is a detail we have never encountered on a Country Club: The sound post connects top and back, giving the guitar a greater rigidity, to avoid feedback problems when played really loud. No heavy dings, no heavy wear. The binding deterioration, so common on ’60 Gretsches, was becoming a real problem on the guitar’s body, since it just could not be stopped in any way. So, instead of keeping on touching it up by replacing the damaged pieces one at a time, we have chosen to ask our luthier Salvatore Mancuso to complety restore it.
The restoration job is just perfect, since Mancuso has used exactly the same material, dimentions and colour of the original binding.

Dating s Fender Guitars by Neck Code: You may recall that I wrote an article in the March issue of TCG that described my research findings for dating Fender guitars and basses with those whacky green or red ink stamped codes. In , CBS-Fender began to implement a new type of neck stamp in place of the usual date stamp consisting of model code, month, year, neck width e.
The new code consisted of 6, 7 or 8 digits and was usually stamped in green ink. An example of this type of neck code found on a Precision Bass is B. Then in , Fender changed to a new type of neck stamp which had 8-digits which was stamped in green or red ink. An example of this is found on a Jazz Bass. These codes can, in general, be deciphered as described in the March article. Since that article was written, however, a number of examples have been submitted to me that do not fit the aforementioned dating system.
Reading pot codes How to read pot codes, and what they mean An early s pot from a Gibson guitar. Once decoded, the writing on the back or sides can be very informative If you’ve been reading articles about dating a vintage guitar, you may well have come across mention of pot codes. The pots, or potentiometers to give their full name, are the variable resistors that control volume and tone.
Better quality pots are often stamped with a number of codes; typically part numbers, date of production, manufacturers codes and resistance values. Many pots don’t carry all of this information, but the better quality guitars produced in America regularly do.
When dating an instrument by the ‘pot code,’ keep two things in mind: The potentiometers must be original to the piece (new solder, or a date code that is off by ten or more years is a good giveaway to spot replacement pots); and the pot code only indicates when the potentiometer was manufactured!

Return to the Main Index. Sometimes there just isn’t enough information on electric instruments and amps to allow them to be properely dated. And many people ask me to try and determine the year of their old amplifier, or to help them with the year of their older off-brand electric guitar. Since I primarily collect amps by Fender, and guitars by Gibson, Fender, Martin, National, Epiphone, Gretsch and Rickenbacker, I really can’t help them with these other less popular brands.
As you have probably noticed, there is plenty of information here to help date the brands that I am interested in.
The Telecaster, Esquire, Precision Bass, etc, because of their metal knob configuration, used “smooth solid shaft” pots. Guitars with plastic knobs (Stratocaster, Jazzmaster, etc.) used “knurled split shaft” pots.
Four decades of guitars from Czechoslovakia. When I wrote my original article about Eastern European guitars [Guitars of the Cold War, Vintage Guitar Magazine, January ], I was still in the process of researching the roots of these instruments. In the first two installments, I had focused on Russia almost exclusively, though I did mention Jolana guitars briefly. Since then, a lot of new information has come to light, enough to dedicate this third installment of “Guitars Of The Cold War” exclusively to guitars built in Czechoslovakia.
This is their story. The Czech Republic has a rich musical instrument building heritage. The Bohemia region is renowned for string instrument manufacture. Some of the world’s best violins and cellos come from this part of the world. Amati of Kraslice has been in the instrument-manufacturing business for over years.
The company is one of the world’s largest brass and woodwind manufacturers and is known especially for the quality of their saxophones. There were over fifty different companies producing musical instruments in Czechoslovakia before World War II.
