Disability Discrimination Disability discrimination occurs when an employer or other entity covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended, or the Rehabilitation Act, as amended, treats a qualified individual with a disability who is an employee or applicant unfavorably because she has a disability. Learn more about the Act at ADA at Disability discrimination also occurs when a covered employer or other entity treats an applicant or employee less favorably because she has a history of a disability such as cancer that is controlled or in remission or because she is believed to have a physical or mental impairment that is not transitory lasting or expected to last six months or less and minor even if she does not have such an impairment. The law requires an employer to provide reasonable accommodation to an employee or job applicant with a disability, unless doing so would cause significant difficulty or expense for the employer “undue hardship”. The law also protects people from discrimination based on their relationship with a person with a disability even if they do not themselves have a disability. The garden will provide a relaxing and safe environment for the 25 adults who are supported by a project based in the Gatehouse. The Gatehouse activity centre is run by Hft, a national charity providing services for adults with learning disabilities. Sessions focus on building social interaction and memory, with themes ranging from local news and history, to food and cultural practices around the world.
Hft brought in a gardening team from Shipley -based Cellar Project to improve the garden, which lacked foundations and was inaccessible to visitors. Senior support worker Juanita Peers said the garden would create new opportunities for people supported by the Gatehouse service. It is hoped that future community history projects will grow out of the collaboration between the service and Cliffe Castle Park and Museum.
Hft supports more than people with learning disabilities in the Bradford district, offering a wide range of supported leisure, learning, and employment opportunities. It runs a Flexible Support Service, designed to help people with learning disabilities live the lives they choose, meeting others with similar interests and making their individual budgets go further. Its Supported Employment team helps people find appropriate jobs, give coaching, and provide supported work.
Hft Bradford also runs employment projects including horticultural skills, a printing service to public sector organisations. It works with Keighley Volunteer Centre which runs a charity shop, a sorting project and an eBay shop.

Through our Executive Board, Standing Committees and Special Events, we provide a forum for the discussion of issues, provide information and support to families, and advocate for the social and economic issues that affect the quality of life of the people we serve.
We provide representation to the InterAgency Council of Developmental Disabilities Agencies and work in cooperation with New York City’s other four Borough Councils as well as other advocacy and planning groups. People we represent We are concerned about the quality of life of people with developmental disabilities such as mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, neurological impairments and learning disabilities.
Whether people have mild, moderate or severe impairments, these are lifelong disabilities that affect people of all races, ethnic backgrounds, and income levels. Some individuals with developmental disabilities only require modest support and training while others require intensive clinical services and daily care and supervision for their personal needs and safety.
What you can do We ask that you take the time to become familiar with the needs of persons with developmental disabilities who are served in your community. Do not balance the budget at the expense of our most vulnerable citizens! We invite you to become an active member of the Bronx DD Council by attending our special events Legislative Breakfast, Family Support Fair, educational forums or by joining one of our standing committees.
