This is the story of one of the world’s most famous military knives. At the first signs of offensive operation on Guadalcanal, Marines received a Marine Raider Stiletto, made by another company after the shipment had first been delivered, in error, to San Francisco. These knives soon became the prized possession of every fighting Marine. Marines depended on it for a combat weapon and for such everyday tasks as pounding tent stakes, driving nails, opening ration cans, digging foxholes, and of course, defending their lives.

The completed knives were a true work of art and spirit, retaining the look, feel, and performance of a battle-ready combat knife. KA-BAR was proud to present Serial No. 1 to the Commandant of the Marine Corps. This knife is now on display in the U.S.M.C. Museum at Quantico.

Guest Contributor March 7, Last updated: The thought of having to evacuate your home due to a sudden and imminent threat is not at all unrealistic. The reality is that sudden and uncontrollable events of nature and man do happen. Natural disasters such as hurricanes, storms, earthquakes, floods and volcanic explosions can strike fast and hard—wreaking havoc on homes, vehicles, roads, medical facilities and resource supply chains such as food, water, fuel, and electricity.

When Hurricane Katrina struck the Southern US Coast just a few years ago, tens of thousands of people had to evacuate their homes with little warning. Unprepared and with no emergency plan, many of these people were completely dependent on scavenging and hand-outs while living in make-shift shelters—fending for themselves in a time of complete chaos and disorder. A Hour Emergency Kit packed with survival essentials would have been an invaluable and priceless resource.

In our unstable and unpredictable world economy, we would be foolish to think there is also no chance of a terrorist or military attack from forces domestic or foreign that could possibly force us to evacuate our own home. An act of war is not the only threat from man.

This blade steel exhibits good toughness, but it does not meet the level of M The primary difference is out-of-this-world edge retention at the cost of a minimal reduction in toughness.

If you frequently use your knife to slice up cardboard, there may not be a better steel than CPM-S V. Both of these steels are a real bear to sharpen up! Consider Elmax if toughness is high on your list. Excellent strength and toughness are balanced with very good sharpenability and corrosion resistance. Elmax is an amazingly well-rounded steel when you take all of these factors into consideration. Equally at home as an EDC folder or as a fixed blade, this blade steel is easy to sharpen, corrosion resistant, and mixes very good edge retention with sufficient toughness.
